Innovative MiyoSmart spectacle lens from HOYA


HOYA Vision Care has brought its new innovative spectacle lens MiyoSmart with Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) technology to Malaysia – offering an effective, comfortable and safe solution for myopia control innovated for children. The lens is the result of a collaboration between HOYA Vision Care and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University that began in 2012.


In a two-year randomised double-blind clinical trial involving 160 children with myopia aged 8 to 13, it was found that children wearing MiyoSmart spectacle lenses had reduced myopia progression in 60% of cases while myopia progression halted completely in 21.5% of cases[1]. The encouraging results of the clinical trial proved the effectiveness of the non-invasive lens in providing vision correction for myopic children while ensuring safety.

With more near-work activity, less time spent outdoors, the high value placed on education performance and other combined and interacting hereditary, behavioural and environmental factors, the incidence of myopia in children is expected to increase. It is predicted that by 2050, there will be 4.758 billion people with myopia globally (49.8% of the world population) and 938 million people with high myopia (9.8% of the world population)[2]. At the same time, effectively reducing the rate of myopia progression by 50% could reduce the prevalence of high myopia by up to 90%.


“Moderate to high myopia that requires -5.00 diopters or more for lens correction is related to increased risk for retinal degeneration, retinal detachment, cataracts and glaucoma (conditions that can cause blindness). Thus, it is essential to keep myopic progression under control, especially among developing children,” said Professor Carly S. Y. Lam and Professor To Chi-ho, School of Optometry, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, who developed the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Spectacle Lens for Myopia Control.

MiyoSmart lenses with D.I.M.S technology are comfortable and safe. Light and thin with UV protection for the eyes, the lens is made using the highly impact-resistant polycarbonate 1.59 that has passed the high velocity impact drop ball test, and is thus ideal for active kids from 6 to 18 years. The lens has a central optical zone for correcting refractive error and multiple defocus segments evenly surrounding the central zone (extending to the mid-periphery) of the lens to control myopia progression. This provides clear vision and myopic defocus simultaneously at all viewing distances. The lens makes use of the natural homeostatic mechanism known as “emmetropization”, whereby the eyeball adapts and shapes to receive focused images as it does for normal vision.

The MiyoSmart lens is able to:
·         Curb myopia progression on average by 60%[3]
·         Slow axial eye growth on average by 60%
·         Halt myopia progression in 21.5% of children

Testament to its excellence, the MiyoSmart lens with D.I.M.S. technology won the Grand Prize, Grand Award and Gold Medal at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in Switzerland in April 2018.

“Hoya has devoted six years to developing MiyoSmart and we can see just how effective this product is. To ensure all users get the best benefits from the product, we are limiting sales of MiyoSmart to eye care professionals that we have trained to guide customers in its use. The eye care professionals will provide follow-up consultation to children wearing MiyoSmart after the purchase. In addition, we are implementing a protocol and ECP guidelines at all optical stores carrying the lens. We believe that this well-managed approach will be beneficial to the children and Malaysians in general in the long run,” said Ms Lew Chee Quin, Managing Director, Hoya Malaysia.

FINLAND’S ROVIO ENTERTAINMENT COLLABORATES WITH MALAYSIA’S ONE UNIVERSAL PRODUCTION TO LAUNCH WORLD’S FIRST ANGRY BIRDS INFLATABLE WATER WORLD STARTING IN KL AND ACROSS ASIA

In a year when the Angry Birds celebrate their 10th anniversary, Rovio Entertainment collaborates with award-winning organizer One Universal Production Sdn Bhd (OUP) to bring Malaysians a fun-filled adventure through the world’s first Angry Birds Splash Water World. The announcement was made at the signing ceremony between the two companies today. This exciting new expanded Angry Birds concept is a good and timely initiative for Malaysia as part and parcel of the Visit Truly Asia Malaysia 2020 campaign. The Angry Birds Splash Water World will be located in SP Setia, Setia Ecohill, Semenyih during the upcoming School Holiday 2019.



Created in 2009 by the Finnish company, Rovio Entertainment, Angry Birds started out as a popular mobile game and has since evolved from games to various entertainment and consumer products in brand licensing. Following on from the recent global release of The Angry Birds Movie 2, the Angry Birds Splash Water World will be a collection of activities big and small taking place under the sun at the wide-open space @Setia EcoHill for two months.
