New findings from survey reveal solutions to help mums find work-life-balance after confinement

With a national target of Female Labour Participation Rate (FLPR) at 59% 2020 and a 30% target of women in decision making roles in the corporate sector by 2016[1], the need to retain and attract women back to the workforce has never been greater. While there are plenty of factors that drive women to drop out of the workforce, the top reason cited by 65% of Malaysian women for withdrawing from the workforce is to care for their children[2].

As the only dairy brand that produces a product specifically for lactating mothers, Anmum™ Lacta believes in supporting mothers throughout different stages of their motherhood; one of it being juggling between returning to workforce after childbirth and breastfeeding. To do this, the brand wanted to understand how they could provide solutions towards retaining more women in the workforce. Therefore, the MummyTime Survey was commissioned amongst over 360 Malaysian mums in the workforce.

The survey revealed a major finding indicating that 79% of Malaysian mums were dissatisfied with the support and facilities provided by their employers when they returned to work after childbirth.

Mothers who responded to the survey cited that some of benefits that would help them transition back to work more smoothly included more flexibility in working hours, maternity, childcare subsidies, extended maternity leave and most importantly – a lactation room.

The survey results indicate that only 1 out of 4 women currently have lactation rooms in the workplace; which caused many of them to use public spaces such as meeting rooms, work cubicles and even toilets to express breast milk, while 83% mothers claim that having this facility within the workplace can help improve productivity by up to 50% or more.

In support of working and lactating mothers, Anmum™ Lacta is embarking on a campaign by sponsoring a fully equipped lactation room within selected organizations, with the objective to encourage employers to show the same support for their female employees who are returning to the workplace after confinement.

This campaign is supported by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp), in line with their work to increase the participation of women in the workforce. As part of their focus to retain women in the workforce, TalentCorp works with employers to implement Flexible Work Arrangements, create parent-friendly environment including lactation room facilities, and introduce work-life benefits such as extended maternity, paternity leave, parents’ network and subsidies.

“As a brand which believes that mothers play an integral role in her child’s development, we were surprised to learn that most mothers do not feel adequately supported especially when they returned to work right after childbirth” said Jose Miguel Porraz, Managing Director of Fonterra Brands Malaysia. “We could not be more thrilled to have the support of TalentCorp. Together, we aim to set the ideal lactation rooms in the eyes of mothers in offices throughout Malaysia to help mums transition back to the workplace after maternity leave smoothly not just nutritionally but with the proper facilities and support system they require.” he added.

Through research and feedback received from mums on what an ideal lactation room should be, each lactation room sponsored by Anmum™ Lacta is designed to set the bar for companies who wish to incorporate a lactation room into their offices. The room will provide nursing mothers with necessities like a refrigerator and freezer, comfortable chairs, mirror, as well as a table. The lactation rooms will also include educational material to help new mothers adjusting to motherhood, nutritional and health as well as fitness information for lactating mothers to remind mothers on the importance of consuming a balanced diet that contains sufficient nutrients for themselves.

With over 85% of the Malaysian mums polled agreeing that a quiet and relaxing environment is necessary to combat the emotional demands of nursing and get optimal breast milk production, the Anmum™ Lacta lactation room serves as a private sanctuary which enables them to have peace of mind while expressing milk. This in turn gives them the assurance that they are fully supported by their company, management and colleagues when they return to work after maternity leave.

“We are pleased to support this initiative by Anmum™ Lacta which will help Malaysian employers retain their women talent better. A fully equipped lactation room does not require much space or investment, but it sends an important message that employers value their employees and are supportive of the challenges faced by mothers to balance their family and work responsibilities, instead of sacrificing one or the other,” said Shareen Shariza Dato’ Abdul Ghani, chief executive officer of TalentCorp.

In addition to the lactation room facility set up at selected companies, Anmum™ Lacta is working with TalentCorp to provide a lactation room guideline that can be used by other employers to establish lactation rooms in their organisation.
